Gerund: We use the Gerund with "to" after certain verbs such as:
admit - avoid - dislike - consider - enjoy - finish - regret - detest - suggest - remember - give up - could help
+ Verb + ing
Examples
My father gives up smoking.
We avoid eating fast food.
infinitive: We use the infinitive with "to" after certain verbs such as:
agree - ask - expect - manage - attempt - learn - promise - need - neglect - hope - intend - plan - pretend
+ to + Verb
Examples
I plan to visit my grandparents.
I learnt to speak English.
Gerund and Infinitive: We use both the gerund or the infinitive after certain verbs such as:
begin - continue - like - love - try - start - prefer - stop - hate - feel like
+ Verb + ing
or
+ to + verb
Examples
I start doing my homework.
I start to do my homework
